Famoso Mexican Street Food San Diego
They’ve operated a taco cart and a food truck, but these days Tacotopia 2016 champion Famoso Mexican Street Food rocks a counter service restaurant downtown, on the northwest corner of East Village. Famoso’s simple street tacos top corn tortillas with onions, cilantro, guacamole, and your choice of traditional taco meats, including carne asada, pollo asado, chorizo, and carnitas.
Vegetarians have plenty of reasons to relish Famoso as well. Along with its potato street tacos, the shop offers gourmet tacos featuring beer battered wedges of avocado. Or, you can go the chile relleno route — the veggie taco starts with a chile pepper stuffed with cheese, then beer battered and fried, then dresses it with guacamole, sour cream, and cotija cheese!
That gourmet street taco menu is where Famoso really shines. Along with grilled or beer battered shrimp and fish tacos, it offers instant classics like the California Taco (topped with meat and french fries), the Gringa Taco (a flour tortilla with meat, beans, and stretchy Oaxaca cheese), and the surf and turf signature taco, featuring shrimp, carne, and portobello mushrooms.
But it’s big winner was the Queso Taco, with grilled cheese melted onto a tortilla along with guacamole and meat. In the case of Tacotopia, it was a delicious al pastor that won over the crowd!
